Thallus epiphyllous, subcuticular, rounded to irregular, 2–15 (–20) mm wide, the margin even or with short rounded to irregular lobes, plane to somewhat convex, c. 20–70 µm thick, pale greyish green to bright medium green, without a bluish tint, ±smooth to rugose, glossy; photobiont Cephaleuros; prothallus not apparent. Perithecia convex, semi-immersed to almost completely immersed, largely overgrown by the thallus or the apex exposed, 0.2–0.5 (–0.6) mm diam., greenish black to glossy black, the boundary between perithecium and thallus not sharp. Perithecial apex rounded; ostiole inconspicuous or whitish, rarely in a shallow depression. Involucrellum brownish black to jet-black and carbonaceous, extending to exciple base level, 25–40 µm thick. Exciple hyaline to brown, 10–15 µm thick. Centrum 0.1–0.3 mm diam. Paraphyses simple. Asci narrowly obclavate, 55–90 × 8–15 µm. Ascospores irregularly biseriate in the ascus, 1-septate, broadly fusiform, constricted at the septum, the cells usually ±equal in size, occasionally the distal cell a little larger, 14–25 × 4.0–6.5 µm; cells not separating. Conidiomata: 1) semi-immersed, hemispherical, with a glossy black apex, 0.08–0.15 mm diam., containing 1-septate bacilliform macroconidia 10–20 × 3–4 µm; 2) convex, glossy black and 0.05–0.10 mm diam., containing simple fusiform microconidia 3–5 × 1–2 µm. | ||
Occurs on the leaves of monsoon forest and rainforest trees and shrubs in northern N.T., eastern Qld and north-eastern N.S.W.; also on Christmas, Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. A very common, pantropical, subtropical and warm-temperate lichen. |
